Activities for Caring about the Environment with Preschoolers

Earth Day is right around the corner, and it’s important to celebrate it with your preschool child for many reasons.

Earth Day creates awareness and encourages communities to celebrate, protect, and care for the environment. This special holiday was created by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970. Senator Nelson was extremely passionate about the environment and believed society should recognize its importance. Thus, April 22 was declared Earth Day.

Earth Day is the perfect time for parents to teach their children about our planet’s environment and what steps can be taken to protect it.

Here are a few ways that your family can spend time learning about planet Earth and how to take care of the community.

Start your very own flower garden.

This hands-on activity will give your child a passion for nature and pride in his environment. Tulips, daffodils, and lilacs are in season this spring and will make a wonderful addition to your landscape.

Go for a nature walk!

Plants, air, sunlight, land, and water are all components of the environment we live in. Going for a walk is a great way to teach your child about the different animal and plant life in your community right as you’re in the middle of it. Take it a step further by bringing a trash bag or two on your walk and picking up any litter you happen to see.

Create your own mason jar herb garden in three simple steps.

First, fill up a glass mason jar with soil. Bury any type of herb seed in the soil, making sure to add another layer on top. Last, add enough water to dampen the soil, and place the jar in a sunny spot inside your home. Over the next few weeks you can watch your tiny garden transform! Plus, this easy activity will teach your child about the type of environment herb seeds need in order to grow.

April 22 is a wonderful reminder to take a step back and appreciate our planet. So, remember to slow down, take a breath of fresh air, and do what you can to protect and care for the environment. Happy Earth Day!
